Remediation started in 2017. The municipal council of Visé and the SPI purchased the site and started the process of demolishing the various structures, remediating the soil and protecting Shaft 1 and the Malakoff tower.
The current project of the coal mine of Hasard is the result of a competition won by Matexi in late 2019. By repurposing the site we not only aim to upgrade its mining heritage but also to establish an overall master plan to completely revitalise the village centre of Cheratte-Bas. The project will turn the site into an attractive whole, both for the current and future neighbourhood residents. A harmonious whole in which open space is expressed through successive, adjoining and attractive green spaces around the classified building.
The old and abandoned industrial estate of 4 ha will be transformed into a sustainable neighbourhood with a mixed programme of 114 residential units, offices and co-working spaces, with social and cultural functions.
The new neighbourhood will enliven Cheratte-Bas with vast green and city spaces that are intertwined with each other through a close-knit network of pedestrian paths. We took inspiration from Cité Jardin, directly across from the site of our new project. A new square will be created at the base of the Malakoff tower, as the new beating heart of the village centre of Cheratte-Bas.
In terms of energy the site will be one of a kind. The mine water will be used as the basis for the heat network that will supply the entire neighbourhood. The water from the mines is warmer by nature, making it an ideal heating source and creating an optimum climate for all visitors.
This collective system will be beneficial for the occupants and will make their lives easier.
In a later phase it is our intention to connect the adjoining sports hall to this system so the neighbourhood can also benefit from this development.
