Together with Ciril, Matexi created a neighbourhood with 82 apartments, 10 houses and a host of commercial and socio-cultural spaces. The new Provincial Building houses the local government of East Flanders and there’s also room for a modern hotel, training rooms and a day care centre. The inner courtyard is transformed into a lively green square in the middle of the Ghent museum quarter with the SMAK, the MSK and the Bijloke site within easy walking distance. Combining different functions on the same site will transform the Leopold barracks into a place of the future.

We ´reprogramme´ existing buildings (whether they have been classified for preservation by the government or not) so that they meet contemporary standards, with full respect for their historical and architectural value. Such as an earlier barracks, an old hospital, a vacant office building, a former brewery.

For over 20 years now Matexi has focused on inner-city reconversion projects, redevelopment of both historical heritage buildings and former industrial sites and vacant, obsolete buildings. These transformation projects fit perfectly with today´s emphasis on dealing carefully with the available space.

Major development projects where, in accordance with a coherent vision, we create a new residential neighbourhood with harmonious architecture, high-quality private interior and exterior space, and with common green outdoor areas: houses, apartments, small squares, cycling and walking paths, green zones. Wherever possible we add amenities: a day-care centre, a neighbourhood store, office space.

We strive for a sustainable future. To succeed in this we work from a long-term vision. We proceed from planet, people, profit: we start out from a duty to care for both the world (planet) and society (people). Profit is a result and a means, never an end in itself - although it is necessary so as to be able to continue practicing our profession.
